CURRENT PROJECTS AND FUTURE DIRECTION
  • Research Topic 1: Exploration of unique photosystems in Indonesian organisms

    We are exploring new exciting terrestrial and marine species, i.e. microalgae, phytoplanktons, cyanobacteria and photosynthetic bacteria, with very interesting photosystems so that we can learn how photosynthesis works at molecular level in these organisms. The exploration study involves isolation of photosynthetic systems, determination of the photosynthetic pigments and structural study of the photosystems. The exploration is also a very important project that supports the biodiversity conservation of photosynthetic organisms in Indonesia.

  • Research Topic 2: Unusual light harvesting complexes

    Some of purple non-sulphur photosynthetic bacteria such as Rhodopseudomonas acidophila strain 7050 or 7750, Rhodopseudomonas palustris strain 2.1.6. and Roseobacter denitrificans as well as cyanobacteria such as Acaryochloris marina have unusual light harvesting complexes. Light harvesting complexes are pigment-protein complexes, which are responsible for harvesting sunlight energy and energy transfer to reaction centers where charge separation occurs. We are interested to resolve the structure and function of light harvesting complexes with unusual spectral properties prior to our learning of how exactly the protein corrects the position of the pigments and adjusts the absorption properties of the pigments to create energy funneling. In order to learn systematically, we also reconstitute light harvesting complexes with modified (bacterio)chlorins having different absorption properties and to produce antenna complexes with the ability to harvest solar energy in a wider range of the spectrum.

  • Research Topic 3: Bio-hybrid solar cells

    To probe the native light harvesting complexes on metal surface, it is interesting that plasmon excitation in metallic nanoparticles provide an excellent way to control the optical properties of matter on the nanoscale. One of the prerequisites for controlling the properties at the nanoscales using plasmonic excitation is the ability to fabricate an on-demand hybrid plasmonic nanostructure with well-defined characteristics. Using this technique we can enhance the productive photochemistry of the light harvesting complexes. This research is one of the core activities when designing novel solar cell nanodevices.

  • Research Topic 4: Biofuels energy

    Photoautotrophic organisms such as microalgae and cyanobacteria, and photoheterotrophic bacteria, have the capacity to absorb light energy and to store it as chemical energy. Therefore exploitation of photosynthesis is a promising approach in the production of renewable biofuels. Here, we are interested to exploit purple photosynthetic bacteria and to optimize the photoproduction of large amount of biohydrogen under nitrogen fixation condition.
