CURRENT PROJECTS AND FUTURE DIRECTION
  • Food Research Project: Pigments as potential food ingredients and functional food

    In the application for food industry, chlorophylls and carotenoids are commonly known as a natural food colorant. The functions of chlorophylls and carotenoids are however more subtle. Chlorophylls and carotenoids function as antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammation, anti-obesity, and a source of pro-Vitamin A. Therefore chlorophylls and carotenoids are highly potential to be used as healthy food ingredients and functional food.

    Our research deals with the endemic plants such as katuk (Sauropus androgynous), suji (Pleomele angustifolia) and buah merah (Pandanus conoides), as well as seaweeds and microalgae, which are typical to Indonesian habitat. The aims of this project are
    • Identification of novel photosynthetic pigments from endemic plants, algae and microorganisms
    • Mapping database for industrially potential natural resources that are rich in chlorophylls and carotenoids contents
    • Application of stable chlorophylls and carotenoids for natural colorants, food ingredients and functional food.

  • Healthcare Research Project: Pigments as potential nutraceutical, cosmeceutical and source of pro-vitamin A

    Indonesia has been known as the world's largest exporter of crude palm oil (CPO) and also one of the most important exporter of seaweeds and some of decapods crustaceans. However, those export commodities have not been maximally exploited, especially as the source of photosynthetic pigments such as beta-carotene, astaxanthin, fucoxanthin, etc, which are important for maintaining healthcare. The project aims to optimise the manufacture process in order to maintain the stability of the pigments as well as to use the waste products of the export commodity such as CPO as source of carotenoids prior to produce nutraceutical and cosmeceutical products. The project also aims to invent and develop stable chlorophyll-based photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy for cancer and tumors. The project includes the study of pigment stability and its degradation pathways.
